Canterbury, Otago & Waikato are once again proving that the power base of NZ rugby has now well & truly moved from Auckland to the three provinces with THE most passionate fans.
Aucklanders simply didn't deserve the team(s) they've had the past 14 odd years. Apathetic is being kind. Boring is being precise.
Let's analyze the support the BIG 3 get....
Waikato - A real NZ rugby heartland. A growing city & traditional rural roots gives a good supporter base. The fans can be fickle, but sure do make heaps of noise for the 'Mooloos', especially with those bloody cowbells.
Otago - Definitely the most loyal support. The 'Scarfies' will support their team through thick & thin. Encourages enormous team unity & southern spirit.
Canterbury - My beloved red 'n' blacks!. Probably the harshest, most demanding fans in the country. If the team is winning the support is fiercely fanatical, easily the noisiest in the country. When the team is playing badly however the fans quickly let the team know their inadequacies!.
So there ya go. All I can say is GO CANTERBURY...... winning the shield & regaining the NPC title are not too far off!. : - )

Ah, I can still remember the atmosphere at Jade Stadium (on Lancaster
Park) for last years' NPC final, the CD was flowing free, and the mighty
Cantabs were doing the business. |
