Aaron Hopa
This week New Zealand rugby suffered a tragic loss when Aaron Hopa lost his life in a diving trip off the Coromandel Peninsula. Described as a "rough diamond" by Waikato coach John Boe, Hopa was a hugely respected player both on and off the field. At just 27 years old he was on the verge of hitting the big time following a strong season for Waikato and being selected as a member of the 1999 All Black summer training squad. He was a player who showed a level of passion and commitment on the field that inspired his teammates and fans alike. There is no doubt that Hopa will be sorely missed not only by Waikato rugby fans, but by all all New Zealand rugby fans.
Though rugby has suffered a loss with Hopa's untimely death, we should remember that more importantly, and more poignantly, he leaves behind a fiance, family and friends who will be shattered at their loss.
