Check out SA S-12 squads just announced. 30 strong though teams other than Bulls have a few to return from injury etc.........Some surprises and now 8 players of colour required in each!!....from superrugby.co.za...........by Dan Retief

Posted on 17 January 2005 - 17:44

Former Springbok tighthead prop Marius Hurter was one of a number of surprises contained in the four South African squads for the 2005 Vodacom Super 12 competition named on Monday.
SA Rugby released the names of 108 players who will do duty for the Bulls, the Cats, the Sharks and the Stormers when the tournament kicks off on Friday, February 25.

The Bulls were the only one of the four franchises to name a complete squad of 30 players with the other three announcing groups of 26 players to allow coaches room to manoeuvre with injured players who might be able to return in time.

Hurter’s unexpected return from the wilderness is probably due to injuries that have struck down Springbok props Os du Randt and Gurthro Steenkamp.

The former Blue Bull was a member of the 1995 World Cup squad and won 13 test caps before joining the exodus of South African players who sought pastures new in England.

He joined Newcastle in the English premiership and will be joined in the Cats squad by another prodigal son in fellow Bok Ollie le Roux; the former Sharks loosehead having been offered a chance to redeem himself by Chester Williams after falling out with Natal.

Another Springbok prop, the oft-injured Faan Rautenbach, finds himself back in the Stormers’ squad.

Some other interesting switches see Lions’ Boks Gcobani Bobo and Dean Hall moving from the Cats to the Sharks; Ricardo Loubscher joining the Bulls from the Sharks and the like of Dewey Swartbooi (exchanging the Bulls for the Cats), Tonderai Chavhanga (Stormers) and Butch James (Sharks) returning to action.

New Springbok Solly Tyibilika, after the raised eyebrows caused by his exclusion from the Natal training squad, has duly been included in the official Sharks squad.

The biggest shock in the four squads is the absence of Cheetahs flyhalf Willem de Waal.

The final four squads of 30 must be confirmed with Sanzar by February 4.

Johan Prinsloo, MD of SA Rugby, said that each of the final squads would contain eight black players, the most ever at this level.

This had been decided at a meeting in Johannesburg on January 10 that was attended by the deputy president of SA Rugby, the national coach, the national selectors and coaches of each of the four regional teams.

Prinsloo described this as an important step for SA Rugby. "The Vodacom Super 12 competition is an international competition where our players' skills are tested against the very best of Australia and New Zealand.

"At this meeting it was decided that all contracted players and those earmarked for national selection will be tested for conditioning and vision skills. Their progress will be monitored throughout the season.

"I am also thankful to the Sharks who agreed to include a player like Solly Tyibilika although he had moved out of their region to another province," said Prinsloo.

Thanks Baz.

Damn interesting squads !! That colour component is an interesting one. With some of those teams it won't be an issue, but others (like the Bulls) it may be.

    Injuries &  Bargains in S-12 2005

Have tried to make a list of injuries etc within the last week from all teams using several sites to help with selections this week.......some are minor and could be selected later in week but others are more long -term  Roll Eyes

My policy is not to use a player under an injury cloud or returning after an op but others may differ....however, we are spoilt for choice after 6-N! Cool

Bargains of course will depend on selection! Tongue

Thanks for that EW, here are some other players that I feel for their price are very attractive to the Fantasy eye.

Chiefs - Tagicakibau

Canes - Weepu, still can't get over how cheap he is.

Saders - O'Neill

Brumbies - Fairbanks and Joel Wilson, one has to start?

Tahs - Palu and Hoiles, either will start at 6, although I have seen somewhere Palu has a minor injury.

Reds - Vedelago

Bulls - Gary Botha is cheap for a hooker

Cats - de Waal

Sharks - Solly Tyibilika. How did you miss Solly out EW?

Stormers - de Villiers is extremely cheap for his talent.
I also believe that Chavanga is under a injury cloud. He apparently was concussed in the last Stormers preseason game last weekend, so that may come into calculations for the first game.

cheers, Kobe

In the 2005 Rugby News preview they have Rua Tipoki listed under the Blues, anybody know about this?

Rua Tipoki is one of those extra 7 named by each franchise as back up ...I think Orks wanted cover in case a certain midfield back was whisked away to answer a summons..........about which I 've heard no more...ANYONE know?  Shocked

Interesting array you've added Kobe ...didn't look further than surface when collecting injury lists......

I see Larkham , Smith & Collins got through game in Canberra OK (won by Brumbies 33-26 after Canes led most of the way. Brumbies drew level with10 to go and Bernie scored a classic to put us away before time) but Matt Gitteau is out for 3-4 weeks with a broken hand .......maybe Mortlock will be kicking for them again in interim? Undecided

Rogers sounds like he will be in the same form he was last year before his injury.

There lots of word out about Freier too, in that he is better than Cannon, good choice at TR.

As for Palu, you probably know as much as me, but he sounds like a Lauaki.

As for sites, normally go straight to their team pages in Aussie, as for SA, I generally stick with

www.rugby365.com

or their team pages as well.

Good man .(+1k again) Had a look at Rugby 365 but still prefer superrugby in format.

Have asked xtrasport rugby(DJ) to publish S-12 teams as they did last year for us...as super rugby did too so here's hoping  Roll Eyes

Have learnt that Smit will probably only come off bench for Sharks(hammy)and that van der Berg may keep Tibylika on the bench as he has found a new lease of life. Seems likely that Venter will start at lock, too.

I think SA teams when they play each other are worth tries & good  pts 'cos scores are like BB scores if the right players are targetted

             Cheers

Van Den Berg is a Lock, so don't think he will replace Solly.

Venter has been left out of the Sharks final squad annouced, because of injury.

Where do you get your info from EW.
