Can anyone please update me on the current state of affairs regarding the fiasco that is SA rugby's franchise awarding for the Super 14.
Politicians and sport never mix.

the latest is its gone back to the broederbond of Free State rather than the home of black rugby, Eastern Province. But you'd never know until next Feb would you?

to add some clarity check out http://www.superrugby.co.za/default.asp?id=148515&des=article&scat=superrugby/super12basically the teams from the Free State, Griquas and Griffons Unions have won the 5th SA spot but the team with the worst record will be replaced by the South Eastern Cape franchise from 2007 for 2 years. Then I can only assume it will happen again. Talk about motivation not to come last. So the South Eastern Cape are now running around trying to find a coach and players for a franchise that wont play any games for a season and may only survive for 2 years.........clear yes, common sense, no. |

After 2008, one South African team each year will be booted out and replaced for the next year by the team that had been relegated the year before.
E.g. - Last placed South African team in 2006 could be the Sharks. Sharks drop out and are replaced in 2007 by the South-Eastern Cape.
2007 - Sharks are out
2008 - Sharks are out
2009 - Sharks back in, but the lowest SAF team drops out (maybe the Stormers)
2010 - Stormers back in, but the lowest SAF team drops out
etc...

theres gotta be a lot of mixed thoughts, sure it will encourage the yaapie teams to be more switched on to super 14 in the future and everyone deserves a shot but then if someone like the sharks or cats just get in and out every 2years they r not going 2 make the impact of old..
what happens 2 a team and the players that get kicked out? do they have to go join a different team or have to miss out?

Yeah imagine the team containing the Bok captain gets relegated and can't play Super 14 for a season, fantastic for the development of the game.
Hey we could do the same in NZ. The Highlanders get the flick and the Bay are in for 2006 as the highest ranked non super 12 NPC team...... sorry Anton, sorry Nick, sorry Carl, sorry Josh

Back in 96 I thought that that should be the way to decide who's in the Super 12 each year - our top 5 NPC teams participate in it each year. It wouldn't work though. We can't have no rugby in Auckland or Otago for 4 months. (As would have been the case this year)
But that way at least we could keep some decent-looking, traditional rugby jersies in the S12 instead of the frankly quite gay-looking jersies of the Blues, Chiefs, Hurricanes, Crusaders and Highlanders.

Just a quick comment re the proposed SA relegation system. Apart from the obvious problem of player insecurity whats to be done re branding. While I don't have any inside knowledge of the operation of a super 12-14 side I can't help observing that a lot of time & effort is put into marketing & building a supporter base for all the current teams with sponsorship & merchandising etc. Unless a team has some security of tenure then I imagine that those areas will be almost impossible to manage. These teams run to a large extent on a healthy revenue stream much of which is generated from a broad supporter base.

South African Rugby is demonstrating how its politics are destroying the structure of the game in what should be one of the games growing markets. The game needs to be evenly distributed, and black players need to be given a good chance to develop. The ratio of black africans to white english & afrikaans is something like 19:1 or 20:1 isn't it? Surely it makes sense to tap into that potential market and pool of players.
