Jantjes back from the wilderness by Dan Retief

Conrad Jantjes © Touchline PhotoConrad Jantjes, four years after his last test cap, was brought back from the wildnerness on Saturday when coach Jake White announced his 28-man Springbok squad to tour Argentina, Wales and France.
You can get live scores from Springbok games by sending an SMS with the message RSA to 34911 (R for rugby, SA for South Africa). This is a SuperSMS service and costs just R2 per SMS.
Jantjes was the only selection which could be described as a surprise when Saru president Brian van Rooyen read out the names of the touring team shortly after the Absa Currie Cup Final at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday night.
Lions fullback Jantjes last played for the Springboks against the USA Eagles in Houston in December 2001 and his return to the squad is due reward for a long and dedicated fight back from injury and the scars that might have been caused by his having been pushed into test match rugby too early.
Jantjes, from June 2001 to December 2001, played eight tests for South Africa; scoring two tries, kicking a conversion and winning the man of the match award in only his second appearance against Australia at Loftus Versfeld.
A multi-talented sportsmen who has represented South Africa at age-group level in three sports, rugby, cricket and soccer, Jantjes should blossom in the positive atmosphere that has been engendered in the White-led Springbok team.
Danie Rossouw of the Bulls is the other player back in favour but for the rest White has stuck to those he has tried and tested.
An obvious omission is the absence of a second flyhalf to back up Andre Pretorius which would indicate that the coach is determined to follow through on his conviction that either Jean de Villiers or Percy Montgomery could be handed the No 10 jersey in a emergency.
A number of players, Jaco van der Westhuizen, Enrico Januarie, Gurthro Streenkamp, Ashwin Willemse, Marius Joubert and Joe van Niekerk, were not considered because of injury while Breyton Paulse has club commitments in France.
Gerrie Britz and Brent Russell have been placed on standby.
