Hi Guys

Wondering if you can help me with an excel based competition I'm going to run at work for the Air New Zealand Cup, and I'm searching for a few 'special features' ... and hoping for some advice or inspiration.

It will be a pick the score or pick the winning team type comp - and I want to add a few different features - something a little different that does't just mirror VirtualRugby or RugbyComp.  And it needs to be relatively simple (or only complex at the beginning.)

One thing I hope to use is "Pick the Ref."  At the beginning everyone selects a referee ... if he refs a match in which the player has selected the correct winning team then that player scores a few extra bonus points.

Does anyone have any other ideas I could incorporate.

Cheers

I can't resist starting with "why not just sign up all your work mates to rugbycomp?" Smiley

You might even be able to convince Pdeb to add some of the features to Rugbycomp if they are good ones.

Of course I am more guilty that most of wanting to do things a bit different so I fully understand your desires Tesrof, so here's a few ideas off the top of my head.

1) Pick a few of the interesting TAB betting options. Such as, first try scorer, half time score. A bit of work to calculate obviously as you need to find the relevant data but if you are going to be entering the scores then you can look up that sort of stuff too.

2) Some sort of bonus points if you choose to pick against your favourite team and get it right. I know personally I really struggle to pick someone other than Canterbury, the Crusaders or the ABs to win in matches involving those teams, but often it's not the smart choice.

So you would need to get people to nominate their fav team at the start, and look for people who pick Northland or another minnow just because it will mean they can consistantly pick against them and cream the bonuses!

3) Some sort of multiplier for picking a string of winners in a row for a given weekend.

4) If you are just playing for bragging rights then consider adding a prize pool, even a small one. It's amazing how much more competitive people will be if there is something to win.

That's a start at least, let us know how you get on, but I would seriously consider just using rugbycomp. Wink

Before joining RH, I used to run a game for the Tri Nations where you picked margins.

The margins were not exact but split into groups

My margin groups had names:
eg "hiding" 20+
"comfortable win" 11-19
"close win" 3-10

My point of difference was the "nail-biter" option (margin < 3 - either side wins). This was inspired by soccer competitions where the draw is a valid pick but it is just a huge punt in a rugby competition. A lot of people commented that they liked having the "nail-biter" as the seventh option.

All the picks had to made before the first game. I think this is important with an excel based comp. Otherwise you'll spend a lot of time each week chasing people to make their picks.

I had an excel entry form, and another excel workbook for reading in the picks and calculating scores (I might be able to find the spreadsheets if you are interested).

I'd also like to reiterate Jules wisdom. I haven't personally run a competition for years - much easier to use Rugbycomp or similar.

Thanks Jules & Teach

I agree 100% it would be totally easier to sign everyone up to RugbyComp ...

I'm doing one for the Soccer World Cup and want to carry on in a similar style.  Using features from Sports betting makes sense as does the "nail biter" option ... I think I'll modify that to giving bonus points for games that run into extra time.

Teach ... if you wouldn't mind digging out your old spreadsheets I'd like to see them (my email address is in my profile.)

Cheers

Found them and sent them Tesrof.

Just looking back at my old work.... The entry form has some nice features - I had forgotten how to do that automatic sizing to the window for example.

However the data storage and calculation sheet is pretty ugly Tongue - I guess I didn't care how it looked  Embarrassed

Thanks Teach ... I do appreciate it.  I'm not at all worried about any "mess" ... you should see the state my Master Workbook gets into after editting 110 pages!

No doubt I'll learn more about excel when I see how you've done yours.

Cheers
