Thats BS the 1995 All Blacks were the best team at the world cup ' not shit hot' I would love to be inside your mind. The food poisoning is a fact go and read the unauthorised biography of  Louis Lywt. Do not come back with this DH the 1995 All Blacks took Rugby to new heights and over the years of 95, 96, 97, for a record of 30-1-3.

And what about 91 Gluck? That team was dominated with Auckland players, and yet they lost. Therefore I suggest that a team domainted by Aucklanders will also not win a World Cup.The proof is in the pudding.

Again in the 1980's this fierce rivalry was re-ignited when Canterbury, on the verge of eclipsing the record for shield defences, played Auckland at a packed Lancaster Park in a match described by many who watched it as the greatest shield game ever. Auckland completely overwhelmed Canterbury in the first half to take a seemingly insurmountable lead into the break. Canterbury coach and later All Black coach Alex "Grizz" Wylie gave one of his rightly great half time team talks which saw Canterbury nearly win the game in the dying seconds as Canterbury returned, with relish, the points that Auckland had so easily scored in the first half.

From www.akrugby.co.nz

The way I remember it, that team talk by Grizz only lasted a couple of seconds and one sentence... he walked on, picking up a ball on the way, and said something like... "This is the bloddy ball... use it!" He then walked off.

Oh... and if I remember correctly, he also punched a spectator on the way onto the field!

Now that was the greatest game of all!

Due for a world cup !!!
That is precisely the attitude that has left 'old bill' off shore since 1987.
They don't give it out on a 'whose turn is it' basis you have to be the best prepared, best equipped side to win it at that tournament ... not just be 'due' for it. We have an opportunity to win it and I think we have a very good chance at that but its only going to take one error and its gone to someone else.

But back to the actual topic ...
I was there for the '85 clash and its still a painful memory but it was a bloody good game.

The best game of that era though was the '83 wellington challenge. By far the best atmosphere (better than the 85 aucks game imho). For those of you too young to remember, Spencer v Mehrts was a late starters follow up to Deans v Hewson.

I think the extra sting in the Auck v Canty came in the fundamental economic changes in the 80s that saw huge movement of work, jobs etc and economic + political influence shift north to the Auck region.
I think the nationwide anti Auck thing was fuelled by the frustration of that shift and of having historically strong teams struggle to compete. Auck rugby became the target to vent any frustration.

I think that is while the rest of the country may not like the 'saders dominance now it won't extend to the level of hatred that the Auck region still generates.

Auckland is the 'england' of NZ domestic rugby or the NSW of Aussie sport. I would think that economic frustration big brother/little brother thing is a factor in why beating NSW at anything is so significant to queenslanders.

I support Canterbury, The All Blacks and anyone playing against England (although thats a marginal call when its the Aussies).
