From NZPA this am......

Canterbury coach Rob Penney feels he has a good mix of youth and experience capable of delivering a third straight national provincial rugby title.  Roll Eyes

Seven newcomers, including All Blacks hopeful Sonny Bill Williams and hooker Paul Ngauamo and wing Telusa Veainu who helped New Zealand win this year's world junior championship, have been picked for the red and blacks who will again be captained by flanker George Whitelock.

Veainu scored five tries in the recent world junior championship in Argentina, including three in the final against Australia.

The other newcomers are lock Rob Verbakel, flanker Brendon O'Connor and wing Patrick Osborne (all University) and midfielder Robbie Fruean (Lincoln University). ...was only on loan! Angry Cry

Fruean has played for Wellington in the national championship but transferred to the Crusaders for this year's Super 14 and is now based in Canterbury.
Also back in Canterbury provincial colours is first five-eighths Stephen Brett who played for the Blues in this year's Super 14.

"We have a great nucleus of players from the last couple of seasons plus some exciting newcomers," Penney said.

"The challenge for us is to try to develop a team that is capable of emulating the outcomes of the last two years.

"It's a fresh start with the competition called the ITM Cup and we'll be starting from scratch like everyone else."

Canterbury will play two pre-season matches - against Tasman at Lansdowne Park in Blenheim on July 16 and against Wellington at Lincoln University near Christchurch on July 23.

Their ITM Cup season kicks off on July 30 when they host Hawke's Bay.

Canterbury ITM Cup squad: George Whitelock (captain), Rodney Ah You, Peter Borlase, Stephen Brett, Wyatt Crockett, Ryan Crotty, Andy Ellis, Robbie Fruean, Steve Fualau, Willi Heinz, Sean Maitland, Nasi Manu, Sam Monaghan, Paul Ngauamo, Brendon O'Connor, Andrew Olorenshaw, Patrick Osborne, Ash Parker, Luke Romano, Isaac Ross, Colin Slade, Matt Todd, Tu Umaga-Marshall, Telusa Veainu, Rob Verbakel, Adam Whitelock, Dan Carter, Corey Flynn, Owen Franks, Richie McCaw, Kieran Read, Brad Thorn, Sam Whitelock, Sonny Bill Williams.

So Telusa Veainu is the rookie to watch! Tongue What about others , DH?

Cheers,

Him and Julian Savea when Savea turns out for Wellington after the Commonwealth games.

Fruean is going to have to work hard in this team with SBW joining in and Ryan Crotty desperate for game time.

Canterbury's strength again this year looks like it'll be the mobility of their forward pack, which boasts talented locks and a more than useful loose forward trio.  What will be interesting will be whether they can lay a platform for what is looking like a lethal midfield logjam to make an impact.

Sorry Baz, like many many others I wouldn't have a clue about most of those players listed. Looking at that list of players I only know half of them (the obvious ones). I simply don't follow the Air NZ/ITM Cup anymore. Its more a passing interest into how the Super squads might look next year. It is now for me purely a development/feeder comp.

Might be a tad more interest this year to see how SBW goes thou.

cheers

From the Press (Chch) yesterday.........

Plenty to work on for Canterbury                                                                By HAMISH BIDWELL

Canterbury have some work to do before Friday's first national provincial championship match this season against Hawke's Bay.

Beaten 25-19 by Wellington in their last pre-season outing yesterday, the red-and-blacks will need to be a lot better if they are to avoid losing three competition-openers on the trot.

You can argue about whether pre-season footy counts for anything, but at 25-0 down yesterday Canterbury looked anything like two-time defending provincial champions.

On the plus side, they've beaten Wellington in every game that's counted in the past two seasons, including both finals and a Ranfurly Shield challenge.

"It was a bloody good battle," Canterbury coach Rob Penney said after the match at Linfield Park.

"They were in pretty good shape and turned up and gave us a bit of a lesson really, in a number of areas."

Among the things Penney had wanted to see was a sounder defensive structure. Well, he certainly saw them tackle because, between their own inability to hold the ball and referee Kane McBride's whistle, Wellington had all the football.

"I was pretty pleased with our defence after one week's work on it but, yeah, they controlled possession and particularly controlled that first 40.

"They played fantastic rugby, I thought, in the conditions and we played some reasonable footy at times but we made a lot of errors and we had no ability to maintain possession in that first half, so that side of it's a bit disappointing.

"But on the upside, a lot of our defensive work was a big improvement from last week [against Tasman]."

Despite dominating possession and territory, it took Wellington 23 minutes to break the deadlock via a try out on the left wing side from prop Neemia Tialata. First five-eighth Fa'atonu Fili added a penalty soon after before fullback Apoua Stewart completed the first-half scoring with a try in the right-hand corner.

No8 Faifili Levave scored their next try soon after halftime and then wing Julian Savea intercepted a Colin Slade pass near his own line and raced 95 metres to score. Hayden Cripps' conversion made it 25-0 with about 15 minutes to play.

For Canterbury there were consolation tries to flankers Brendon O'Connor and Matt Todd (2) and a couple of conversions from Colin Slade.

Todd was probably Canterbury's best player, followed closely by props Wyatt Crockett and Peter Borlase.

Lock Isaac Ross hobbled off after 20 minutes, while All Blacks hooker Corey Flynn played 40 minutes. Ryan Crotty was good at second five-eighth and wing Patrick Osborne was busy.

SCORERS

Wellington 25 (Neemia Tialata, Apoua Stewart, Faifili Levave, Julian Savea tries; Fa'atonu Fili pen, Hayden Cripps conv) Canterbury 19 (Matt Todd 2, Brendon O'Connor tries; Colin Slade 2 conv). HT: 13-0

Just reminding you R & B fans that you can't take your dominance for granted! Cool

Cheers,
