Anybody over the ditch concerned about this?

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/rugby/international/4030864/League-ranks-abuzz-as-Quade-Cooper-switch-firms

Would it completely kill off the Wobblies WC hopes if he left?

He's being offerred some big coin isn't he?

Surely the RWC means more than that. If he becomes a true star in that time, he'd still be worth those dollars. NRL is one thing, and I do enjoy it, but Union has an international fixture list that League cannot match.

I can not get myself too excited over this sort of stuff.

As its contact negotiation time the I'll go to NRL/ARU or these days AFL.  Is standard policy by the managers.

My gut says as the fact that QRU and ARU stuck by him at the start of the year when things went pear shaped. And the fact he enjoys playing rugby in QLD, a RWC next year will more than likely have him staying put.

I reckon its about time all the codes got together and set a standard 5 level contact format:  base (fringe squad/possible team) developed player (consistent squad/team member with possible 'A' requirements), developed player + (at least 'A', possible squad), national player (at least squad/ wallaby), international rep (top level wallaby player).

Just needs to be adapted for each code.  Roughly the same amount of money across each code.  Cap the levels and stop this shopping around bullshit.

Quade is really illustrating the lack of depth in the wallabies at the moment.

Yeah the code switching thing is funny. Was watching some league thing on the tele in the weekend, they were brandishing a newspaper clipping about Karmicheal Hunt being rested for the rest of the VFL (note: not AFL) season. I think I found it:

Spent Karmichael Hunt’s season over

Because of the aerobic demands of Aussie Rules, he's pretty much exhausted. Must be carrying to much bulk.

How they hell is Israel Foleu gonna do it!???

cheers

I find all the bleating that has come out of league circles over the last few years re player poaching quite ironic.

It was only 15 years ago that league were doing all the poaching and rugby had few answers.......and that had been standard practice for the previous 60 years.

The dumb thing is, Quade hasn't actually done anything yet. He's only just broken into the Wallabies. All of a sudden he wants to be the highest paid union player in Oz!?

Talks leave ARU confident Cooper will stay

Thats a crazy amount of money.

None of the ABs are on that sorta money. Carter & McCaw most certainly are not.

Crazy!

I mentioned this years ago that the Tuqiri incident about his contract negotiation and that the Giteau negotiations will cost the ARU big time.

What I love about this story was that last week the ARU was saying this was all just agent positioning to up his value...

This week everyone is coughing up sizable sums to secure his services...

Just positioning huh?

There is a very interesting article here

Basically what it says is that Cooper found out that a fringe wallaby (i.e. out of the side for 3 years) was offered a base contract $30k higher than he was.  Yes I know he should make more with rep duties.  But if he gets injured he won't.

As the article suggests if funds are tight why waste them on players that coach doesn't want.

If correct it put Cooper in a far better light and exposes the f### up that the ARU is

TBH, I can't blame cooper for shopping around. He has a background in both codes and at 300-400k he is being severely underpaid if gitts is on ~1mill. This sort of cross code shopping around for extra zeros has been going on since rugby turned pro in '95 with big jonah being the first, but most certainly not the last.

Its the AFL converts I feel sorry for. Hunt and Folau are nothing more than prepaid advertising space. Folau was courted simply because he has a pacific island heritage and the AFL are going to use him as leverage into western sydney.

BTW, hai to all the rugbyheads, I just popped in the other day & saw that all the usual suspects were still in tow, so thought I might drop in for a chat.
