Hey guys. Happy New year and all that jazz.

I hear what you are saying Geeves and Teach, it's definitely very quiet around here. I take some of the responsibility for that as I have been pretty distracted with family and health issues in the last couple of years and didn't have the energy to devote to Rugbyheads or Fantasy Rugby.

I know it is the offseason, but even during the rugby season in the last couple of seasons activity on the site has been dwindling. I take some of the responsibility for that as I have been pretty distracted with family and health issues in the last couple of years and side projects like Rugbyheads haven't been a priority.

Even in my absence there has still been a lot of interesting discussion on the site, and plenty of discussion board contributors that have posted far more often to the board than I have. I have posted 555 posts, and there are at least a dozen Rugbyheads who have posted more than me, but even that most prolific posters have started to dwindle in the last year. It is all about communication, so if you post something and no one replies then your interest in posting something else wanes, after all you can talk to yourself anytime you like!

I want to change that this year though. My health is on the mend and it's going to be a great year to be a Rugby Fan, and I'd like it to be a great year to be a RugbyHeads supporter/contributor too. Even if it turns out to be a last hurrah for the site I am keen to give it a try.

I have a few ideas how we can kick start things again.

Here is my plan (that started rough, but has fleshed out considerably as I wrote it!):

1) Move the site to rugbyheads.com
Move the site to rugbyheads.com rather than hosting it under planetnz.com/rugbyheads. Rugbyheads.com currently redirects here but I think the site can have more of it's own identity under it's own domain. (I can set it up so all search engine links can redirect to the Rugbyheads.com domain so we can maintain existing traffic).

2) Revert RH to original format
Reboot the site by reverting back to the site's original format, articles written by suitably qualified Rugbyheads (in terms of membership and loyalty, probably based on number of posts on the board for a start) and a discussion board. I would consider all of you as immediately qualified to start posting your own articles. You could consider it a personal rugby blog in essence, but your posts would just be a subset of the whole Rugbyheads experience.

You can already see a list of all the posts by a particular user on the Discussion Board via their profile, so I see it as an extension of that.
eg: http://www.planetnz.com/rugbyheads/board/index.php?action=profile;u=1;sa=showPosts

We can enable comments on the articles (or posts) so that people can comment directly on your article, and discussions can flow that way.

3) Use WordPress for main part of site
My idea for reinstating the article publication process is to use a local install of the WordPress blog software, which I have some experience configuring. This allows multiple authors at different levels of access (read-only, author-with moderation, author-without moderation, editor, admin).

4) Promote old content on site
Once we get that going we can migrate the old articles over to it, which still have some amusement value but have been buried for ages. You can see them here to refresh your memory.
http://www.planetnz.com/rugbyheads/articles/?pg=articles

5) Promote rugbyheads.com
Once we get the blog going we could make a concerted effort to let people know there is some live here again. I know some of you had set up a Rugbyheads group on FaceBook, and I used to contribute to FantasyRugby.com which got us quite a bit of traffic, but if we are all keen to promote it then I think we can quite quickly get some attention flowing back.

6) Other fancy bits
Once we get to that point then we can look at some other additions. We had some of these in the past, but they required a lot of administration to keep up to date, so my preference would be to try and automate things like match results and competition scoreboards, and news articles from other sites. Twitter might provide some of that, I have just created a rugbyheads twitter account to have a play with.

My thoughts are that if we can get the first 3 things done in the next week or two (I have the time at the moment) then we can look to start pulling ex-Rugbyheads back to the site and promote the site to potential new Rugbyheads in time for the start of the Super 15.

Of course I'm not going to go to all this effort if I have to generate all the content, so hopefully you are inspired to be able to help, even if it's just posting new articles and starting new discussions on the board.

I look forward to your thoughts.

Cheers, Jules

Great to hear the health is improving and if you can resurrect the site as well you might be put up for saint hood. Or at least another bottle of bundy when I'm next in town.

The overall format sounds good.  Having the ability to knock out a story about a successful Qld side and the inevitable AB collapse in the RWC will bring joy to my heart. As I now have a HD plasma and the HD sports coverage pack the clarity of my vision can be merged with my one red eye. Not too sure how this will improve the writing style but you can't have everything.

With a rampaging Reds side this year and a wallaby side at least starting to stagger in the right direction I could be a very happy rugby support this year giving grief to you lot.

Hey again. Great to hear there is some interest in kick starting Rugbyheads!

The fact that you guys are all keen has got me enthused.

I have already started building the new Wordpress powered Rugbyheads.com and hope to be able to open it up to a few Crash Test Dummies early next week for a test drive.

I hear that some of you are already thinking about your first RH Article which is great. If/when you get something down then let me know and I'll make you one of the first to test out the new site.

If anyone else has any technical expertise with configuring Wordpress or making images then let me know.

I am getting WP doing what I want but there has been a bit of trial and error, so another head to bounce ideas off would be great.

I also have some ideas for the images for the header and Black Toddadder images that it would be more efficient (and probably better quality!) if someone else could be working on those.

I also had an idea of using Google Calendar to handle the match schedules as I have found online schedule feeds in a few places online. I would rather that someone didn't have to enter them all manually, so sussing out a way to import them would be the way to go. Any assistance on this task would be appreciated. Give me a yell if you can help.

I look forward to hearing from you and getting this reboot off the ground!

Cheers, Jules

Hey again. Just another quick update to let you guys know how things are progressing.

I have changed up my plans on using WordPress, given I have got so much functionality already developed in the current RH site I decided to extend the blogging feature that BT uses for his home page blogs to allow other members to blog too.

I have almost got it ironed out enough for a few brave souls to crash test for me, hopefully should have it going by the end of the week.

I already have one article to post from our resident RedHead, but would love to know that there are some more in the pipeline.

Stay tuned.

Cheers, Jules

I'm happy to contribute whenever possible. Have done a little bit of blogging over the last year http://hobbyhorse-gwynn.blogspot.com/, and am very active on Twitter so will promote as much as I can on there.

Plus I nominate myself as our Melbourne correspondant! I plan to follow the Rebels very closely... well after I follow the Hurricanes naturally.

I'm likely to limit my Fantasy Rugby activities to just the three this year, I've already signed up for Sky Virtual and Fox Fantasy, so I guess that just leaves Rugbyheads!

Also if you need any assistance with Twitter I'm more than happy to offer my assistance. I operate 3 Twitter accounts currently (my personal 1 and 2 parody accounts).

Let me know what you need.

You've got how many twitter accounts?Huh How can you twatter bleep that much?

I always find the #eqnz tweets quite funny...kinda like this....
"was that an earthquake?"
"yes"
"I felt it"
"so did I"
"me too"
"about a 4 I reckon"
"yes"
"i nearly shat my pants"

Pretty much follows that exactly after each aftershock

That's funny DH!

But I thought that was just a random list of the things that go through your brain everytime the earth moves around here. Cheesy

Some comfort to know that maybe you aren't the only one who thinks like that I guess?

With Tweetdeck, makes it very easy actually. And I'm yet to send a tweet from the wrong account... yet.

I'm working on it!

I have switched my plan back to just extending the existing RH site, and I have the article posting feature working pretty much now. Hope to get it released today.

PM or email me your articles if you have them ready and I'll post them as part of the release.

And here we go.... Cheesy

As I mentioned I went back to extending the existing site on top of the discussion board membership and I have just released it.

If you have been involved in submitting news links or editing game data in the past then you should already have access to the "My Rugbyheads" section at the top menu. (Note: it's not visible from the discussion board menu just yet, click on the Rugbyheads logo to see if you have access.)

BT, Geeves and Stipe have all got articles published, and I have a couple that I hope to finish tomorrow in the works. I am expecting DH to weigh in with something too and after the first round is complete I'm sure we can come up with a few more things to talk about! Smiley

When you go into My Rugbyheads you will see a list of any articles you have posted in the past, or as it most likely, you will be able to add a new article of your own.

By default your article will not be published when you post it, I will have to check it and publish it, but the plan is to open the publish feature up to others once we get the bugs ironed out!

Have a play and let me know either by PM or email if you find any bugs (there are a few I already know of), or have any features/improvements.

Get into it, and lets get this season off to a good start!
